Oshkosh West Student, Teacher, and Resource Officer to be Named Assembly ‘Hometown Heroes’

MADISON – The Wisconsin State Assembly will recognize Duaa Ahmad, Ken Levine, and Officer Mike Wissink from Oshkosh, Wisconsin as “Hometown Heroes” at the upcoming Assembly session on February 20th.

Ahmad, Levine, and Wissink, who were nominated by their State Representative, Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh), were at Oshkosh West High School on December 3, 2019, when an incident involving Officer Wissink and a student occurred. After Officer Wissink was stabbed by the student, he fired his gun to disarm the student. Upon hearing the gunshots, Ahmad led 100 fellow classmates out of the school and across the street to the Mosque she attends, getting them to safety until police arrived. Meanwhile Levine headed towards the gunfire, where he saw Officer Wissink with stab wounds. He quickly made a makeshift tourniquet to slow the bleeding, helping save Officer WIssink's life.

“The willingness for Duaa, Ken, and Mike to sacrifice their own safety to help ensure the safety of others was truly heroic,” said Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna), who selected them for the award. “Their quick thinking and bravery are the exact qualities that make the Oshkosh West High School and community a better place, and I am proud to recognize them as Assembly Hometown Heroes.”

The Wisconsin State Assembly sees giving back to the community as one of the most valuable characteristics one can have. The Assembly Hometown Heroes program seeks to identify and recognize individuals from around the state who give of themselves to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of those around them. Hometown Hero Award winners are invited and introduced as a special guest at an Assembly floor session and given the opportunity to speak.
