Proposal Expands Rights for Adopted Children

Earlier this week I testified in the Assembly Committee on Children and Families in favor of my bill, AB 577, relating to access to a deceased adoptee's original birth certificate and information about birth parents by an adult child of the adoptee.

The importance of family is a pillar of our society, but for Wisconsinites who were adopted, learning about their biological history can be a challenge. This proposal eliminates cumbersome and costly requirements for the families of adopted children to access birth certificates of their deceased birth parents. The proposal, authored by myself and Senator Rob Cowles, is supported by adoption advocacy groups, community organizations and Wisconsin’s Department of Children and Families.

This simple change saves Wisconsinites who are trying to learn more about their past the hassle, expense, and time of petitioning the court system while still protecting the privacy of birth parents throughout their lifespan.

We need your input!

Every 10 years, the legislature is responsible for updating Wisconsin’s district boundaries using the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, as required by the Wisconsin Constitution. This data was recently made available by the federal government. Now it is time to update the boundaries, and we are looking for input! If you have an idea for the updated district maps, submit your plans here between September 1, 2021 and October 15, 2021: drawyourdistrictwisconsin.com.
