In a few
weeks, I will be introducing legislation to
decommission the GBCI and replace it with a new
facility in Northeast Wisconsin. While I am
preparing for my mid-April press conference to
formally release the legislation and data
supporting this initiative, it is becoming clear
that the current costs of operating and
maintaining the 118-year old facility exceed the
expense to build a new facility. Additionally,
it is becoming increasingly clear that other
challenges facing the facility, including
capacity, worker safety, efficiency and improved inmate
care are only available in a new facility.
