Tusler Statement on DPI Guidance for the 2020-2021 School Year

Madison, WI – State Representative Ron Tusler issued the following statement in response to the guidance released by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction about the upcoming 2020-20201 school year:

“Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction released guidance, not mandates for Wisconsin schools. Wisconsin has over 400 school districts, containing more than 2,200 elementary, middle, and high schools. Each individual school and school district faces different challenges regarding COVID-19. I hope we can all support each district’s different decisions to face these different challenges.”

“Some aspects of the DPI’s guidance is impractical to implement. For example, it will be challenging to reduce the student-teacher ratios to 10/1 or fewer in each learning environment. Other aspects will be particularly onerous on parent’s working schedules and their employers. Finally, these major changes regarding how our schools operate may negatively affect the mental health of our students.”

“School administrators now have a difficult job to mitigate the risk of contracting COVID-19, while providing environments where quality education can occur.  As a state, we should pray for their success.”
