October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and with the current challenges in our communities there’s a lot left to do to prevent further abuse and protect victim’s rights, as we remember the many lives lost to domestic violence year after year.
“As a longtime member of Wisconsin’s Council on Domestic Abuse, I’m proud of our progress in strengthening restraining orders, prosecuting perpetrators of violence more effectively, and enhancing victim services to make it easier to seek help. These measures have enjoyed strong, bi-partisan support, and I and several colleagues plan to reintroduce legislation to assist with each of these areas in the upcoming session.
“The heightened stress, anxiety, social isolation and economic impacts caused by COVID-19 have caused domestic violence cases to spike worldwide, with victims confined with violent partners and separated from support. For many domestic abuse survivors, home is not a safe place.
“If you or someone you know are being abused, know that domestic abuse service providers remain open, and call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1−800−799−SAFE (7233) or visit endabusewi.org to find a local shelter where you can go and get help. Again, the phone number is 1-800-799-SAFE or go to endabusewi.org. If you are in immediate danger, please dial 911.

I have the great honor to work with first responders on legislation to keep them and our communities safe. Recently, I was named “Legislator of the Year” by the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin at their virtual state convention for the current legislative session. Additionally, I was named “Legislator of the Year” by the Wisconsin Professional Police Association for the second consecutive session (last session it was as a member of the Assembly, this time in the Senate). It is quite a humbling experience to be honored by your heroes. Thank you to all my friends in public safety that have helped me craft legislation, for all you do, and to everyone for your support as I continue to serve!
This week we celebrated Veterans Day. A day to reflect on the heroes that have selflessly served our country. I recognize the sacrifices you have made and would like to thank my Dad, Grandpa, uncles, cousins, friends, constituents, colleagues, and millions more that I’ve never met who have served our country courageously in the U.S. Armed Forces and defended our freedom so well. I am so grateful for and proud of your service! I am humbled to have been given the honor of speaking at the Brown County Veterans Day ceremony by the United Patriotic Society at the Neville Public Museum, and reflect on what Veterans Day means to me.
