Today, margarine is often promoted as a healthy alternative to butter. However, at the beginning, the butter substitute known as oleomargarine was controversial and subject to many restrictions. On September 14, Senate Bill 183 was introduced repealing the restrictions from that era. The library recommends the following resources for further information on the history of the controversy.

"The 'Oleo Wars': Wisconsin's Fight Over the Demon Spread" / Gerry Strey, Wisconsin Magazine of History, v. 85, no. 1, Autumn 2001.

Developments in Wisconsin's Oleomargarine Legislation / Legislative Reference Bureau, Informational Bulletin 65-3 (revised edition July 1966). LRB/i/65-3 rev. (In library use only.) Explains the history and development of legislation as well as listing bills from 1881 to 1965.
