WARN OWNERS OF FLOOD DAMAGED HOMES
Check with county zoning administrator before making
repairs to avoid wasted money and heartache
Madison…..For homeowners that suffered flood damages last month, Senator Dale Schultz has an important warning.
Schultz is warning home owners to check with their county zoning administrator before making repairs.
Schultz explained that under state and county law, the 2007 floods have triggered an assessment process that will affect any dwellings found to be in flood plain.
Under the law, dwellings found to be in a flood-fringe will have to be elevated. Dwellings found to be in a floodway will have to be moved to higher ground or torn down.
Schultz expects the law will apply in every county hit by flooding. In Richland County, Zoning Administrator Harriet Pedley said the assessment process to identify dwellings in flood-fringe and floodway areas will begin next week.
Schultz asks community members to pass this warning on to any friends and neighbors that had flood damage to a home. He said if there is any possibility a dwelling could have to be elevated, moved or torn down, it could avoid heartache and wasted money if the homeowner know before investing to repair flood damages.
The bottom line said Schultz - Please check with the county zoning administrator before making flood damage repairs to a dwelling.
