Global Warming and Climate Change

Global warming is the most significant environmental issue ever faced by humankind. A warmer climate will affect everyone and fundamentally diminish the planet for future generations.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change—a highly respected international body of scientists—predicts that a warmer world means harsher storms, more prolonged drought, rising sea levels, new diseases and the extinction of many species of plants and animals.

In the spirit of Wisconsin’s great environmental leaders—John Muir, Aldo Leopold, and Gaylord Nelson—it is time for Wisconsin to lead on global warming. Now is the time to act. Crises present great risks but they also present opportunities, and it is here that we should focus.

Working together to find ways to reduce global warming emissions is not only socially and environmentally responsible, it will position the badger state favorably when the federal government gets around to passing a national bill. Wisconsin has already increased our commitment to energy efficiency, renewable energy, and biofuels, but we will need to do more—much more. And here is where the opportunity lies.

Wisconsin Safe Climate Act

Representative Black and I have introduced the Wisconsin Safe Climate Act. This legislation would require Wisconsin to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels. Reducing greenhouse gases is a critical step in our fight against global climate change.
