Two election reform measures authored by Senator Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) gained Senate approval Wednesday.

Senate Bill 115 is a bipartisan measure changing Wisconsin’s presidential primary to the same day as the spring general election. SB 115 was necessary after national Republican and Democratic parties required Wisconsin’s primary occur after March 1. The presidential primary had occurred the third Tuesday in February. The Senate approved SB 115 with a voice vote.

"While my preference would be to have Wisconsin’s primary earlier in the election cycle, I think the state’s primary will be particularly important to all candidates," Lazich said. "Wisconsin has drawn immense national attention in recent months. I think that will continue as presidential candidates try to win over Wisconsin voters."

Senate Bill 116 (SB 116) is mandated by the federal MOVE Act. The MOVE Act requires more time for military voters to cast their votes. Among other things, SB 116 changes the date of the fall partisan primary for statewide office. The Senate approved SB 116 with a 19-14 vote.

"While SB 116 brings Wisconsin into compliance with federal law, it more importantly allows soldiers the time necessary to transmit their ballots," Lazich said.
