Lazich: GAB Must Post Walker Recall Petitions Immediately
State Senator Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) issued the following statement in response to the Government Accountability Board’s decision to not post recall petitions for Governor Scott Walker on the GAB website.
“Will the Government Accountability Board ever stop talking out of both sides of its mouth?
“First, the GAB said it would accept blatantly false signatures such as Mickey Mouse and Adolf Hitler on recall petitions. Then, the GAB said it did not have plans to proactively check for duplicate signatures. Both times, the GAB caved to common sense and reversed course.
“Now the GAB says it will not post the recall petitions for Governor Scott Walker online. The GAB did not have an issue with publicly posting the petitions for nine recall elections of state senators last summer, or even the four state senate recall petitions just weeks ago.
“Currently Wisconsin law requires you must disclose not only your address, but also your occupation and employer while donating money to a political candidate or party. The information is all readily available online. According to the GAB’s own website, “election petitions have always been public records.” Public access to the recall petitions is critical, especially with the many reports of fraud during the signature collection process. The GAB needs to follow through on its responsibility and post the petitions online immediately.
“I want to believe the GAB is conducting its business in an even-handed, non-partisan fashion. I lose faith every time the GAB talks out of both sides of its mouth.”
