Wisconsin Consumers Receive Refunds for Third-Party Charges
The Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) recently announced that Wisconsin consumers will be refunded by U.S. Cellular for charges they received for unwanted third party text messaging services.  This case began when one Wisconsin consumer filed a complaint with DATCP when they started receiving a series of unsolicited text messages from "Gossiptexts."  The consumer ignored the texts, but was still charged $9.99 for the service.  These third party vendors are allowed to charge consumers on monthly bills, but only if requested by the consumer.  If a third party vender changes false fees or bills for services without the consumer knowing, the practice is known as “cramming.”  DATCP has provided the following tips to avoid being a victim of cramming:
·         Review monthly billing closely, looking for questionable or unauthorized charges
·         Dispute any unauthorized changes with the third party vendor through the number listed on the bill
·         If you do not get a resolution, take the issue to your cell service provider
