With winter and cold weather temperatures fast approaching, we are once again thinking about the need to budget for those winter heating bills. The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) provides financial assistance for heating and electric costs as well as energy crisis situations to qualifying residents.
Household eligibility for WHEAP is based on a number of factors, including household size, income, and energy costs. In most cases, energy assistance payments are paid directly to the household energy provider, and applicants are advised to contact their energy provider. Applicants must be able to provide photo identification, proof of citizenship or legal residence, and proof of residency. Also needed in the application is evidence of prior heating costs and proof of income for the three months prior to the month of application.
