Statement on Governor Walker’s letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood

(Hudson, WI) In Hudson today, the Governor signed a bill into law that will clear the way for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to fund our state's portion of a new St. Croix River Crossing to replace the outdated and dangerous Stillwater Bridge.  This legislation, authored by Senator Sheila Harsdorf (R €“ River Falls), eliminates a procedural roadblock that stood in the way of Wisconsin funding its share of a new St. Croix River Crossing.

“Today, we took an important step toward making a new St. Croix River Crossing a reality,” said Harsdorf.  “The Stillwater Bridge is in a state of disrepair and poses a threat to public safety every day.  Replacing the bridge will make transportation safer for motorists crossing the river, as well as ensuring efficient delivery of emergency services and commerce."

Congressional approval is still needed in order for this project to move forward.  Bipartisan legislation in both the United States Senate and House has been introduced and is awaiting legislative action.

“I am pleased the State Legislature has taken bipartisan action to remove a barrier to this vital transportation project and am hopeful that we will finally see progress towards replacing the current bridge and upgrading our regional transportation infrastructure.  I commend the efforts of our federal elected officials from both states and both parties in obtaining the necessary federal approval to replace this bridge that continues to put public safety at risk."
