The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has recently received an increase in consumer reports of scams offering to lower credit card interest rates for a fee. Caller ID displays for these calls have shown a phone number nearly identical to the consumer’s number. The name and phone number that appears on the phone display can be changed by scammers to show a ‘credible’ name and local number to entice consumers to answer the call. Hang up immediately if you receive a call from ‘Cardholder Services’ offering to lower your credit card rates. Pressing keys on your phone could lead to more robocalls from scammers. In many cases, the goal of these scammers is to charge your credit card with phony fees or to sell your phone number to other scammers.
