Relief Options for Farmers
For farmers dealing with feed shortages this summer, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is allowing hay harvesting and animal grazing from selected state-owned lands in counties where natural disasters have been declared, including Pierce and St. Croix counties. This is offered free of charge and will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Farmers who graze animals will have the responsibility of setting up their own temporary electric fencing and water tanks for animal grazing. Also, farmers participating in the program must sign an agreement that the hay taken from state-owned property will be used for livestock and not sold. Individuals will be limited to using 20 acres.
If interested, contact the property manager assigned to the property to find out about availability and to complete an agreement. To find out if there is a location that works for you, call DNR toll free at 1-888-936-7463, seven days a week from 7am to 10pm.
