Regional Legislators Call for Action on St. Croix River Crossing

(Stillwater, Minnesota) - Senator Sheila Harsdorf (R-River Falls) and Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb met with Minnesota Department of Transportation Commissioner Tom Sorel Friday to tour the Stillwater Bridge.  City officials and legislators from both states were also in attendance, along with representatives of both Departments of Transportation.  Before the tour, a round table discussion was held with the members of the St. Croix River Crossing Coalition.

"There is a coordinated effort from both states to move this project forward," says Harsdorf.  "The new St. Croix River Crossing is incredibly vital for our region's transportation infrastructure and we need action now.  This project is a matter of public safety as well as regional economic development.  The new bridge has broad bipartisan support on both sides of the river among local, state, and federal elected officials."

Federal approval is necessary before construction can begin on the new St. Croix River Crossing that will replace the aging Stillwater Bridge.  Congressional action is required to create an exemption from the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.  Secretary Gottlieb and Commissioner Sorel said both administrations support a new bridge and are committed to working together to encourage Congressional action.

"I commend our federal elected officials from both Minnesota and Wisconsin who are working together in a bipartisan fashion to move forward on legislation that will allow construction of a new St. Croix River Crossing," says Harsdorf.  “Time is of the essence.”
