Legislation passed earlier this spring and recently signed into law is now easing the burden for small egg producers to sell directly to consumers. 2013 Wisconsin Act 245 allows egg producers with 150 chickens or less to sell directly to consumers without first obtaining a food processing plant license. Farmers must still obtain a retail food establishment license to sell at farmers’ markets and follow basic food safety regulations to sell eggs directly to consumers, such as proper storing conditions and packaging. The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is in the process of updating regulations to further assist egg producers.
