This week marks the nationwide recognition of Sunshine Week, which highlights open, transparent government and public access. This spring, Wisconsin plans to launch its spending disclosure website called OpenBook Wisconsin. This website is part of the on-going effort to make state government more transparent for citizens.
OpenBook Wisconsin will give citizens easy access to State of Wisconsin expenditures, or the amount of money Wisconsin spends to do business. It will include payments Wisconsin has made for purchasing goods or services. You will be able to search the website database by state agency, expense category, and vendor by fiscal year. At the launch of the website, the database will include information beginning with the fiscal year 2008 through the most current month. There are future phases planned to include more information in the coming months, such as employee salary data, grants that have been awarded, and contracts that state agencies have with vendors.
The Wisconsin Department of Administration (DOA) is overseeing this project. Please visit their website at www.doa.state.wi.us for more information as OpenBook Wisconsin goes live in the coming weeks.
