October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, promoting women to get a mammography, one of the most effective tools in the fight against breast cancer. The month also provides an opportunity to educate the public on who may be at high risk for developing breast cancer, and it encourages the raising of funds for research into the cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure for breast cancer. The pink ribbon has become a powerful symbol to increase awareness, honor survivors, and remember those who have lost their battle with cancer. Last year over 210,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Women are encouraged to get tested annually.
