May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, which is part of a national campaign to increase awareness and provide information on mental health issues.
The State Legislature joined in the effort this session by creating the Speaker’s Task Force on Mental Health chaired by Representative Erik Severson.
This panel produced a number of reforms that were passed and signed into law to modernize the state’s mental health laws and provide quality treatment as well as accessibility of services.
Senator Harsdorf was the Senate sponsor of one of these measures which encourages peer run respite centers enabling community-based treatment provided by individuals who are in successful recovery from mental illness or substance abuse.
