The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is warning consumers to protect themselves against "sweetheart scams", which are prevalent amongst online daters. These scams involve scammers starting relationships under fake profiles, building the trust of the victim and then using a "sob story" to convince their victims to give them money or personal information. Many times the money is requested as a wire transfer to another country.
Some tips from DATCP to keep your wallet safe from heartbreak:
Be aware if your online love interest:
-Asks you to leave the dating site and communicate by personal e-mail or instant messages
-Professes love for you in a heartbeat
-Requests that you send personal information including social security, bank account or credit card numbers
-Makes plans to visit but cancels due to a last-minute medical, financial or family emergency.
-Asks you to send money by wire transfer to someone you do not know or have not met in person.
