Governor requests federal disaster assistance for soybean cop losses
Governor Walker has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to designate Burnett and Polk counties as disaster areas due to soybean crop losses as a result of cold and wet weather in September.   After a wet spring that delayed soybean planting by two to three weeks, the growing season ended prematurely after a killing frost hit in mid-September.  As much as 36 percent of the soybean crop was lost.
If USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack declares the disaster areas, farmers there and in adjacent counties would be eligible to receive low-interest loans to help them recover from the losses.
