The Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin mailing all products from a central location starting this upcoming spring. This includes all driver licenses and identification cards. Individuals will be given a receipt with the photo that will appear on the license or ID. The receipt will be valid for 45 days and can be used for driving, voting, and travel requirements. Licenses and IDs will generally be received within five business days.
This change follows state compliance with the federal REAL ID law, which requires more substantial security features on the cards and in facilities that produce the cards. This requirement could not be met with the current over-the-counter practice.
