Bewley Statement on the Madison Protest

MADISON – Senate Democratic Leader Janet Bewley (D-Mason) released the following statement on the Madison protest:

“The unrest we have seen in Wisconsin and across the nation is the consequence of intense, concentrated and justified anger over systemic injustice. For the most part, they have been peaceful. Last night they were not, and what happened was not acceptable. As the Governor said, an act of injustice against one person is less justice for us all. Violence, and hatred have never led to justice, and they won't now.

"The sad part is that all of this could have been prevented. The Republicans who control the legislature have refused to act to address the systemic racism that threatens the fabric of our society; they won't even acknowledge it. They have the power to protect the rights of people of color who are suffering, yet they do nothing. Instead, they are now suggesting we protect statutes instead of people. Republicans have shown more outrage over statues than the senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.

“Change is long overdue and it is time the legislature take bold, meaningful and comprehensive steps to dismantle policies that have tipped the imbalances in our state. From incarceration to education, and health outcomes to economic opportunities, we cannot continue to hide from uncomfortable conversations or ignore the systemic racism and racial disparities that exist in our state.”
