Statement on State of the State Address

In response to Governor Walker’s State of the State address, Sen. Tim Cullen (D-Janesville) issued the following statement:

Gov. Walker’s speech did not reflect the Wisconsin that I see and hear about every day.  His flowery description of Wisconsin’s economy today reminded me of one of President Reagan’s favorite sayings, “Facts are stubborn things.”  Governor Walker was in complete denial that Wisconsin has lost private sector jobs for six consecutive months, the only state in the nation with this record.

Gov. Walker said in his speech, “Tonight, I’m asking small business owners from across the state to consider hiring one more person this year.”  I find that suggestion completely out of touch with the way that jobs are created.  Governor Walker’s words are an insult to every job creator in Wisconsin.  Job creation is a matter of supply and demand.  No small business owner would create a job because a politician in Madison asked them.  It shows a complete lack of understanding about how jobs are created.  Jobs are created when consumers need more of the goods and services than a small business can provide with its existing workforce.  It then adds one or more jobs to meet consumer demand.  I have worked in the private sector and I understand this simple reality.
