Shilling Celebrates Syttende Mai Weekend

MADISON, WI – Syttende Mai is held annually on May 17th celebrating Norway’s independence from Denmark. As Norwegian communities across the state prepare for this festivity, Senator Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) and other legislators marked the occasion by passing Senate Joint Resolution 47 proclaiming May 18, 19, and 20, 2018 as Syttende Mai Weekend in Wisconsin. 2018 Syttende Mai Royalty, Princess Katelyn Dunnum, 1st Attendant Hailey Jubera, and 2nd Attendent Josie Hofslien made a special visit to the Capitol to highlight and encourage everyone to attend the 50th Annual Westby Syttende Mai Festival.

“Visitors can experience a little piece of Norway with food tastings of rommegrot, lefse, and lutefisk,” said Sen. Shilling. “But if lutefisk isn’t your thing, you can always check out the rosemaling art displays, polka music and parades. This celebration is a great opportunity for communities like Westby to showcase their heritage and for all Wisconsinites to celebrate as honorary Norwegians.”
