Sen. Smith’s Statement Regarding Governor Evers’ Special Session Announcement

MADISON – Today, Governor Evers announced a special session to address gun violence in Wisconsin. Gov. Evers has already expressed support for legislation to implement universal background checks and Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO) in the state. However, Republicans did not hold a public hearing for the bills, despite overwhelming support from Wisconsinites for stricter gun safety measures.

In response to this announcement, Senator Jeff Smith (D-Brunswick) released the following statement:

“The special session is a great opportunity for Republicans to step up and take action. Governor Evers’ leadership can save lives while preserving the rights of gun owners. I urge my Republican colleagues to set aside political self-interests and join Democrats in prioritizing these lifesaving proposals.”
