Hire Howard Part II
Senator seeking job shadow experiences in the 17th Senate District

In 2018, I launched a Hire Howard series to experience different jobs throughout the 17th Senate District. I was inspired by two high school students who job shadowed me in 2017 to learn more about the legislative process and state service. I recognized that I could learn a lot from the people I serve by working alongside them and I was right.

I was very lucky to be invited to many different businesses and locations during my Hire Howard series in 2018.  I worked on the Kirschbaum Farm in Glen Haven and learned all about their robotic dairy.  I helped in the lab at the Reedsburg Area Medical Center.  I spent a day in manufacturing at Lowe Manufacturing in Viola.  I visited two dental clinics in Cassville and Dodgeville.

I shadowed the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department, the Monroe Fire Department and the Reedsburg Police Department for a taste of law enforcement and public safety.  I worked with Dr. Marnie Dresser at UW Platteville Richland Center and helped out in a gym class at Platteville High School. I visited with residents at Schmitt Woodland Hills in Richland Center and potted hanging baskets at Northwoods Orchard and Greenhouses in Mauston to prepare for Mothers’ Day shoppers.

It was inspiring to do the hard work that is done every day in the 17th Senate District. It was even more important to learn, first-hand, about the challenges and opportunities our business owners, employees, students, customers, clients and patients experience on a daily basis. These hands-on encounters were a terrific way for me to learn and better understand the ways I can be supportive as your State Senator. The Hire Howard series most definitely impacted my interpretation of many local issues and influences my decisions on a regular basis.

I am launching Hire Howard Part II for the summer of 2020. I am seeking invitations and ideas for jobs that I should pursue this year. I have a couple of ideas left from 2018 that I will revisit, but I have the whole summer to learn and I am looking for your help.

May I job shadow you? What do you do? Where do you work? What will I learn?  What do you want me to know after I spend time on-the-job with you? Please keep in mind that I would like to talk about my experiences in my E-Update and share photos and ideas with our readers.

I am looking for unique experiences and everyday life in your world. I am seeking more than a tour and showcase. I want to experience your job. Put me to work!  Consider me an intern, but be prepared to answer questions. I have a lot of them.

If you have an idea or invitation, please email me at Sen.Marklein@legis.wisconsin.gov or call my office. Please be sure to provide a description of the experience, what you would hope for me to learn, ideal timing for the experience and the best contact person to set it up.  I look forward to hearing from you.
