County-Wide Assessments Removed from State Budget

A provision in Governor Walker’s proposed state budget to shift the property assessment duties from municipalities to counties has been removed from the state budget by the Joint Committee on Finance according to State Senator Janis Ringhand.

The proposed change was roundly criticized by both county and municipal officials who said that the changes were brought forward without notice, would be difficult to implement and represented another unfunded state mandate from Madison.

“I appreciate that the members of the Joint Finance Committee recognized the concerns of our local officials,” Senator Ringhand, a former Alderwoman and Mayor, said. “Any changes to how assessments are done should be as separate legislation, not tucked into the state budget.”
