Legislative Leaders’ Joint Statement on John Doe Reform
Madison…Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) released the following statement announcing that both chambers will schedule a vote in October on the John Doe reform bill (Assembly Bill 68/Senate Bill 43).
“We have come to an agreement that both legislative chambers will bring John Doe reform to the floor for a vote in October.
“The state Supreme Court officially halted the secret investigation of conservative groups in July. It is now time to make sensible changes to the state’s broad John Doe statutes.
“We would like to thank Rep. Dave Craig (R-Big Bend) and Sen. Tom Tiffany (R-Hazelhurst) for their leadership on the issue. We look forward to the final legislative passage of the bill that reaffirms free speech, puts an end to unconstitutional investigations for political purposes, and continues to give investigators the tools needed to solve serious crimes.”
