SEN. COWLES STATEMENT ON MILWAUKEE ARENA VOTE
MADISON- Senator Robert Cowles (R-Green Bay) issued the following statement today regarding his “no” vote on a bill to use state taxpayer money to fund a basketball arena in Milwaukee:
“I think it is incredibly unfair that my constituents in Northeastern Wisconsin are being asked to pay for a sports arena in Milwaukee. In 2000, the citizens of Brown County voted by referendum in favor of increasing their own sales tax to pay for the renovation of Lambeau Field, with minimal help from the state to pay for transportation infrastructure.
While I would certainly prefer for the Bucks to remain in Milwaukee, I believe the citizens and businesses of Milwaukee County, who stand to gain the most from a new arena there, need to be the ones to pay for it.”
