New DA appointed in Marinette County

MARINETTE (WLUK) -- A new district attorney has been appointed in Marinette County to take over for a DA who resigned because of understaffing.
DeShea Morrow will be the lead prosecutor in the county, Gov. Scott Walker's office announced Friday. She has been an assistant DA in Marinette County since 2009.
“DeShea Morrow is a respected community leader who has devoted her life to family and justice for her community,” Walker said in a news release announcing her appointment. “Her legal experience, professionalism, and respect amongst the community make her an excellent district attorney for Marinette County.”
Before becoming an assistant DA, Morrow worked as an assistant state public defender. She has a law degree from Oak Brook College of Law and Government Policy.
Morrow replaces Allen Brey, who resigned earlier this month. In May, he told FOX 11 Investigates there was a backlog of more than 400 cases in the county. Brey says that was the result of a lack of prosecutors and support staff in the office.
Earlier this week, State Rep. Andre Jacque, R-De Pere, said he would begin pushing legislation to add 20 additional district attorneys around the state.
Walker's 2017-19 state budget proposal includes money to give raises to current prosecutors, but no provisions to hire more. The budget-writing Joint Finance Committee has added money for half a prosecutor's position to help with the workload.
