The proposal is a combination of a number of past bills relating to the FoodShare program.
Lawmakers reintroducing food stamp fraud bill
MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) - Two state lawmakers plan to reintroduce a bill intending to fight fraud within Wisconsin's food stamps program, called FoodShare.
The benefits of the program are paid for by the federal government, then the state government administers those benefits to eligible families.
Representative Andre Jacque (R-De Pere) and Senator Rob Cowles (R-Green Bay) point to Brown County as an example where investigators have uncovered millions of dollars in fraud each year.
But the lawmakers say county taxpayers are often the ones to pay for those investigations because the county normally pays well over double what they get in payments.
That's why they're writing a proposal to reimburse local governments for fraud prevention and recovery.
The proposal would also limit the number of FoodShare replacement cards issued, and unused benefits would expire after one year.
