Steineke Shows Support for WISCONSIN Budget

MADISON – Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) applauded the two-year spending plan, fittingly named the WISCONSIN Budget, members of the Joint Committee on Finance approved this afternoon. The finalized budget is aimed at directing dollars towards priorities that are most important to Wisconsinites, making significant investments in K-12 education, healthcare needs, and our local roads and bridges.

“The WISCONSIN Budget is one that I’m incredibly proud to support, because it is a budget for every Wisconsinite, no matter their zipcode,” said Rep. Steineke. “We heard voices from every area of the state, and created the budget to mirror their priorities.”

Governor Evers’ budget proposal, coined “The People’s Budget,” would have increased government spending by $6 billion and raised taxes and fees by more than $1 billion. Upon holding over 200 listening sessions and receiving more than 40,000 budget surveys, Assembly Republicans quickly learned that the exorbitant tax-and-spend proposal from the governor was not aligned with Wisconsinites’ priorities.

With 86% of responders being against raising taxes by more than $1 billion, and cutting taxes on the middle class and increasing state support of K-12 education being their first and second priorities, respectively, Assembly Republicans created the WISCONSIN Budget to better reflect the priorities of their constituents. Under the Republican-backed budget, public schools will receive the largest total investment in K-12 education, real dollars will be put into ensuring high-quality and affordable healthcare for our loved ones, and communities will have the resources needed to ensure our roads are safe to travel – all while providing over $500 million in tax cuts.

“The people of Wisconsin have spoken, and as elected officials, we have done our job by listening,” continued Rep. Steineke. “Rather than indulging Governor Evers’ liberal wish list, we’re making responsible decisions with taxpayer dollars that focus on the priorities that matter to Wisconsinites. I look forward to supporting the WISCONSIN Budget on the Assembly floor in the coming weeks.”
