Wisconsin’s Local Redistricting Group has CANCELLED the regionally-located 2020 Local Redistricting Training Seminars & Workshops.
Due to the issued guidance of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and the Wisconsin Department of Health, we must regretfully postpone the Local Redistricting Workshops. We will tentatively plan to reschedule the workshops, possibly as virtual webinars, in May or June of 2020. We will send a priority notification to everyone currently registered regarding if and when the workshops are rescheduled. There will also be another opportunity in April of 2021 after the start of local redistricting as we will conduct a second round of workshops around the state.
Seminar & Workshop Abstract:
The Local Redistricting Group, consisting of staff from the Legislative Technology Services Bureau (LTSB), Legislative Reference Bureau (LRB), and UW-Madison Applied Population Laboratory (APL), will provide information on the upcoming 2020 US Census, the legal process of redistricting, and the software utilized for local redistricting in the state of Wisconsin. LTSB will also discuss the logistics of the 2020 rehearsal redistricting pilot program, scheduled to start in June.
The morning session will provide local officials and GIS professionals with information about the upcoming 2020 Census, local redistricting timelines, and information on current local redistricting statutes. This will include an overview of the ‘how and why’ of redistricting for counties and municipalities, as well as discussions of procedures, guidelines, and the laws that shape redistricting in Wisconsin.
The afternoon session will be a "hands-on" demonstration of the all-new WISE-LR software, which will be used for local redistricting in Wisconsin. WISE-LR is a web application developed by the LTSB specifically for the state statutes of Wisconsin and local redistricting laws in 2020. WISE-LR will allow local officials, or their delegates, to create, analyze, and share county supervisory plans, ward plans, and aldermanic plans with accurate demographic data. Attendees will have time at the end of the workshop for experimentation and one-on-one "hands-on" instruction. This afternoon portion is where having a laptop is imperative.
