The biennial state budget act, 2009 Wisconsin Act 28, passed by the legislature and signed by Governor Jim Doyle on June 29, 2009, includes a number of provisions relating to motor vehicle insurance. It generally requires that all motorists have liability insurance and sets the minimum amounts of coverage that must be carried. It also requires that all motor vehicle insurance policies include coverage for underinsured drivers. The provisions relating to compulsory motor vehicle insurance take effect on June 1, 2010. Those relating to underinsured or uninsured motorist coverage apply to policies issued or renewed on or after November 1, 2009.
