STUDENT VETERANS BILL -- AB 201 NEWS

Assembly Bill 201, a bill I proposed giving our military veterans registration priority for courses within the University of Wisconsin system and the state’s technical colleges, continues to successfully move through the legislative process.

Strong bi-partisan support led AB 201 to being heard, voted on in committee, and then scheduled and voted on by the full Assembly. The bill has now passed out of the Senate Committee on Transportation, Public Safety, and Veterans Military Affairs unanimously, making this important bill available for Senate floor debate and passage. I am optimistic this will happen during the fall floor session in time for student veterans to make use of this policy for the spring 2013 semester.

Assembly Bill 201 is important. Many veteran grants have time limits that expire after a set amount of education time, and frequently veterans cannot gain access to needed courses in time to complete their degrees before their education benefits end. Gaining enrollment into required courses during the benefit timeframe is not always possible due to specific class limits and registration restrictions. This bill eliminates that particular barrier, and helps our veterans finish their earned education and start their follow-on careers.

Many veterans return to Wisconsin with young families and work full time to support them while studying to improve their future. Already behind their peers because of the time and the risks they took to serve and protect us all, helping them with course registration priority is just a small way we can serve them for the time they spent serving our nation.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ASSISTANCE
A WAUNAKEE GEM

Waunakee Neighborhood Connection is an amazing community effort serving the Waunakee area. In addition to the information and resource services, Waunakee Neighborhood Connection (WNC) operates a free store open to those living in the Waunakee School District or the Village

of Dane. Whether individuals are in between jobs, need help on an ongoing basis, or have special unusual life circumstances, WNC is there to help and support through free clothing, furniture or home furnishings. Additionally, among other efforts, WNC supports tutoring programs, collects and distributes new and used school supplies, operates Build-a-Bed for those in need and organizes Adopt-a-Family at Christmas during the holiday season. To donate your services, items or money, or if you are in need of assistance, contact WNC

directly by calling them at (608) 849-5740 or through their web site: http://waunakeeneighborhoodconnection.com/WNC/. Thank you to those affiliated with WNC for being such generous and caring neighbors!

PARTNERING WITH WI DIVISION OF VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION AND AREA EMPLOYERS
I had an amazing opportunity to see, firsthand, what a wonderful relationship the Windsor-based Walgreens Distribution Center has with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development's Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR).
The DVR helps eligible, disabled individuals find employment through an evaluation program, counseling, job development and placement or post-employment services.  DVR partners with employers statewide to match employment opportunities with individuals.  The local Walgreens Distribution Center is one such employer who found tremendous success with the DVR Business Services.
Area businesses interested in exploring a win/win partnership should contact Division Administrator Michael Greco and his team at (608) 261-0050.

BUSINESS VISITS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Owners Bob and Cindy Joers provided a recent tour of The Little Gym of Middleton, a learning and physical development center for kids ages 4 months through 12 years old.

During a recent visit, Memorial Pet Services owner Mark Meinholz discussed the relationship between pet owner, veterinarians and aftercare practices in Dane County.

The Frank Beer Distributors, Inc. facilities provides good jobs and opportunities for District 79 citizens.

I welcome the opportunity to visit your business.
Please contact me to set up a time.
