VETERANS DAY

On November 11, 1918 on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the fighting in World War I ceased. President Woodrow Wilson designated Veterans Day as Armistice Day to recognize the cessation of fighting. He stated "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations." For more history on this commemorative day, please go to http://www.va.gov/opa/vetsday/ .

It is the brave men and women who commit themselves to defending our nation that protect the principles put forth in the Declaration of Independence and who commit themselves to protecting the citizens living under these principles. I am deeply grateful for their heroism and the enormous sacrifices they have made to safeguard our freedoms.
