Happy Thanksgiving

It is that time of year again, when families gather to reminisce about the good old days and say what they are thankful for.  I am thankful this year for my family, football and for my constituents.  It has been an absolute pleasure to serve as your voice in Madison and I hope you feel the same. Always remember that my office is open, any concern or question you have will be answered.

Please have a fun and enjoyable holiday. Go Packers and Badgers!!

Are You Ready for Thanksgiving?

ReadyWisconsin wants you and your family to be safe.  Following these simple tips during the Thanksgiving weekend can save you from heartaches, headaches and potential dangers.

On the Road

  • Check the roads; before you leave, get the latest Wisconsin road conditions at www.511wi.gov

  • Keep gas in the tank: Have at least a half tank of gas in your car in case you are stranded or stuck and need to run your heater.

  • Have a winter emergency kit: Keep a kit in your vehicle with candles and matches, a flashlight, pocket knife, snacks, a cell phone adapter, a blanket and extra clothing. For a complete list and a chance to win a kit, go to http://ReadyWisconsin.wi.gov

Thanksgiving Day Fire Danger

  • Each year more than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day

  • Make sure all stoves, ovens and ranges are turned off when you leave the kitchen

  • Set timers to keep track of turkeys and other food items that require extended cooking times

  • Follow all manufacturer guidelines regarding the appropriate use of appliances including turkey fryers

Accidents Happen, Be Ready

  • Cooking-related burns are common at Thanksgiving.  Save the butter for the rolls and not a burn.  For superficial burns, cool the area by running cold water on the burn until the heat eases, then loosely cover the burn with a sterile dressing.  Seek appropriate medical care.

  • ReadyWisconsin is a campaign from Wisconsin Emergency Management with a mission to prepare individuals, families, and businesses for emergencies and disasters. For additional Thanksgiving safety tips, visit http://ReadyWisconsin.gov.

Governor Walker Invites Youth to Decorate the State Capitol Christmas Tree

Today Governor Walker asked art teachers, parents, and youth all across Wisconsin to help the State of Wisconsin decorate the Capitol Christmas Tree. The theme of the tree this year will be, Honoring 163 years of Wisconsin’s Veterans.

“As the holiday season comes, I am excited to announce that the Christmas tree displayed in our State Capitol will have homemade ornaments created by Wisconsin’s youth,” said Governor Walker. “I am hopeful we receive ornaments from all across Wisconsin so that we are able to showcase the diversity that makes up our great state. I invite all Wisconsin residents to stop by the Capitol and view our state’s holiday display.”

The 2011 Capitol Christmas Tree was located by a DNR warden in the Brule River State Forest area. The DNR is arranging delivery with a local trucking company and the exact delivery date has yet to be determined due to deer hunting considerations but will be finalized soon. The tree will be put up in the Capitol Rotunda, lit and start to be decorated on Monday, November 28th and will be completed by Friday, December 2nd.

Teachers or students interested in displaying ornaments on the tree must make their submissions by December 1, and the ornaments must be based on the Honoring 163 years of Wisconsin’s Veterans theme. The ornaments can be mailed to:

An 18 foot balsam fir is headed to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue where it will be presented to first lady Michelle Obama the day after Thanksgiving.

The official White House Christmas tree comes from Tom and Sue Schroeder's farm in Marquette County.  Their fir was entered into the national Christmas Tree Contest and were selected as national grand champions.  The prized fir will be in the White House famed Blue Room.
