Assembly passes three veterans bills by Rep. Wynn
Wynn’s bills focus on helping vets find jobs
(Madison, WI) – State Representative Evan Wynn (R – Whitewater) applauded the Assembly for their bipartisan passage on Tuesday of three bills that he authored to help veterans find jobs. The proposals are aimed at helping veterans make the difficult transfer from military life to civilian employment.
Wynn, a 22-year veteran himself, authored the bills in consultation the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs and various veterans service organizations.
“Our veterans offer their life and limb in defense of our great country, the least Wisconsin can do is help them find employment as they transition to civilian life,” said Wynn. “I applaud the Assembly for moving these bills another step closer to becoming law.”
Two of the three bills will help veterans get professional licenses in Wisconsin, and are endorsed by the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs.
The Assembly also approved Wynn’s third proposal, which allows the state to appoint a qualified veteran with a disability to a state job rather than go through the traditional – but sometimes long and expensive – hiring process. The proposal mirrors federal law, Wynn said.
Currently, veterans with disabilities can only be appointed to state jobs if the positions are non-professional or entry-level only. The bill expands the eligible positions to all classified state jobs, as long as the veteran is certified to possess the necessary qualifications for the position.
“Most veterans have served their country admirably for their entire adult life, so the transition to public service is natural,” said Wynn, “Veterans with disabilities can have a harder time going through the typical application process but this proposal will streamline the process, making it easier for them to make the transition from military to civilian public service. ”
Rep. Wynn represents the 43rd Assembly District, which covers portions of Rock, Jefferson, Dane and Walworth counties.
