Reps. Richards and Pasch welcome state health secretary’s
turn-around on public health grants

Madison--Reps. Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee) and Sandy Pasch (D-Whitefish Bay) issued the following statements today upon receiving news that state Health Services Secretary Dennis Smith has reversed his original decision to oppose public health grant applications from the Milwaukee Health Department and University Health Services at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

“While I wish he would have supported these applications from the start, I am pleased our state’s top health officer finally saw the light on the benefits of investing in public health,” said Rep. Richards.  “Now Wisconsin can be considered for federal funding that will help address our state’s childhood obesity epidemic, reduce chronic diseases such as asthma and diabetes and lower overall health care costs.”

“Given the severe health disparities and high burden of chronic diseases in Milwaukee, I am glad that Secretary Smith had a change of heart and will pursue this federal funding,” said Rep. Pasch. “Doing so will ensure that we are able to improve the health of our communities moving forward.”

After hearing that Secretary Smith had planned to block applications for federal health grants, Reps. Richards and Pasch sent a letter (attached) earlier this month to federal Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius urging her to consider Community Transformation Grant (CTG) applications originating from Wisconsin without requiring a letter of support from Wisconsin.
