Walker administration balances budget on the backs of struggling families
Health care cuts will price families out of insurance, raise health care costs for others

Madison—Rep. Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee), the ranking Democrat on the Assembly Health Committee, released the following statement after state Health Services Secretary Dennis Smith announced his plans for making $554 million in cuts to the state’s health care programs for eligible seniors, children, families and people with disabilities.

"Once again the Walker Administration is asking working families to be the only ones to sacrifice to balance the state budget. Now they are delivering health care sticker shock to thousands of Wisconsin families who are already barely making it. These cuts are being done in a way that force people to go without health care and force them into expensive emergency rooms when they get sick.  I was particularly concerned by the Walker administration’s suggestion that insuring more children through Medicaid is a big problem.  The last place we should be looking to balance the budget is health care for children.”

This morning, Rep. Richards sent the attached letter to the chairs of the Assembly and Senate Health Committees asking them to schedule a joint hearing to provide the public, consumers, advocates, providers and others the opportunity to comment on the Administration’s plan to cut Medicaid.
