“We received word via letter today that the co-chairs of the Joint Legislative Council have decided to disband the Special Committee on Health Care Reform Implementation.

As the former co-chairs of this bi-partisan study committee it is disappointing to see it end unilaterally while there is so much work left to be done. Our committee was doing its work in public and had reached consensus on all major issues so far.

While we respect the process of “majority rules” the simple fact remains that Legislative Council Study Committees have been a highly successful tool of the Legislature to finding working solutions complex issues. That success has come because of hard work on the part of citizen and Legislative members with a goal of a successful outcome. Having an outside opinion is beneficial and makes good public policy.

Decisions on something as important as Wisconsin’s health insurance exchange should be made transparently and with maximum public input—not behind closed doors.”
