State Representative Jeff Mursau (R–Crivitz) made the following statement on Thursday following his vote in favor of a bill creating a new iron mine permitting process:
“The people of Northern Wisconsin need and deserve new career opportunities,” Mursau said. “The work we’ve done today paves the way for new careers and a prosperous future for our citizens and their families.”
The mining bill passed by the Wisconsin State Assembly is projected to:
- Create a reasonable permitting process and timeline that doesn’t compromise environmental integrity;
- Encourage 3,000 new construction-jobs and a $2 billion short-term economic impact in Wisconsin;
- Encourage 2,800 – 5,600 new long-term mining jobs and a $600 million – $1.2 billion annual economic impact in Wisconsin; and
- Encourage an average $82,000 pay and benefits for workers for mining employees
The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration. The Senate has until March 15th, the end of the legislative session, to take final action on the bill.
