UW Students Thank Legislators of the Year

This award was presented to elected officials who have aptly served the needs of students of the University of Wisconsin System. The six elected officials who received the 2013 “Friends of the UW.” Awards are U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI ), U.S. Representative Tom Petri (R-WI 6th District), State Representative Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan), State Representative Cory Mason (D-Racine), State Senator Fred Risser (D-Madison), State Senator Dale Schultz (R-Richland Center).
Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI)
Senator Baldwin has been at the forefront of fighting for college affordability by encouraging the national conversation about lowering student loan rates.“Senator Baldwin has shown repeatedly that she’s a great student advocate.”said Courtney Morse, Executive Director of United Council of UW Students.
Congressman Tom Petri (R-WI 6th District)
Congressman Petri demonstrated his commitment to finding real solutions by crafting his own student debt legislation. “Congressman Petri thinks outside the box and promotes bold reform to help students.”said Lamonte Moore, President of United Council of UW Students , and former student at UW- Fond du Lac.
State Representative Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan)
Representative Ballweg has worked hard to get students involved in task forces and the legislative process, specifically the UW Restructuring Task Force and a bill on responsible action in medical emergencies.“Representative Ballweg has always been a strong advocate for Wisconsin students, especially in fighting for financial aid for working families with kids in college,” said Amanda McGovern, UW-Stevens Point Student. “Representative Ballweg is also lead sponsor on the Responsible Action bill, that will save student lives.”
State Representative Cory Mason (D-Racine)
Representative Mason has worked with students for stronger funding for the UW, working toward an affordable degree, and safety on campus. “As a member of the budget-writing Joint Committee on Finance, Representative Mason was a staunch advocate for Wisconsin’s students, fighting for financial aid, UW support, and defending the voice of students,” said Dylan Jambrek, Government Relations Director of United Council of UW students. “Representative Mason’s been a strong advocate for the Wisconsin Idea.”
State Senator Fred Risser (D-Madison)
Senator Risser has worked directly with student constituents  to further student issues and legislation, particularly working on Responsible Action legislation, and a bill that would let students elect student members of the Board of Regents from their peers. “Senator Risser has worked across the aisle to advance the life-saving Responsible Action legislation, and is spearheading the student push to have more say over their representatives on the Board of Regents,” said Genevieve Carter, a UW-Madison sophomore.
State Senator Dale Schultz (R-Richland Center)
As a member of the Senate Universities & Technical Colleges Committee, Senator Schultz has focused on the needs of students and their families, not just the needs of the UW System. “Senator Schultz voted to protect the funding stream of United Council, the nonpartisan student voice. Dale Schultz is a man of principle and a true friend of the UW,” said Matt Riedel, United Council of UW Students Legislative Affairs Chair, and a UW-Eau Claire student.
The United Council of UW Students is a statewide advocacy and organizing not-for-profit organization that was established in 1960 to represent all students of the UW System and advocate for them on issues of higher education pertaining to value, quality, and the student experience.
