Rep. LeMahieu’s Legislation to Change DNR Board Heads to State Assembly
Madison—State Representative Dan LeMahieu (R-Cascade) left the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources pleased after the committee voted in a bi-partisan fashion 12-4, passing Assembly Bill 104, membership to the Natural Resources Board.
Currently, the only requirement for appointment to the DNR Board deals with geography, so the DNR Board has membership from all parts of the state. Assembly Bill 104 requires that 3 members of the board must be sportsmen or women (have held an annual hunting, fishing or trapping license in at least seven of the ten years before the year of nomination) and one member of the board must have an agricultural background.
These requirements would have to be fully in effect by 2017 which gives the Governor a full cycle of appointments to fulfill the requirements of 3 sportsmen or women and one agricultural person.
Assembly Bill 104 is the third attempt to pass this common sense legislation. Versions authored by LeMahieu were passed on bi-partisan votes both in assembly committees and through the State Assembly, only to be ignored in the State Senate.
"I live in, and represent a rural district. The farmers and sportsmen in my district want a DNR Board that is more responsive to their concerns," said Rep. LeMahieu. "Passage of this bill will help to ease some frustrations that hunters and farmers are constantly having with the DNR."
Rep. Dan LeMahieu(R-Cascade) represents the 59th Assembly District and currently serves on the Joint Committee on Finance, as well as the Joint Committee for Review of Administrative Rules.
