Public Service

• Served on the Dane County Board Supervisor for 13 years, where he served on the Public Protection and Judiciary, Personnel and Finance, and Transportation Committees. He also sits on the Lakes and Watersheds Commission and the Madison Development Corporation Board. He is a former member of the National Association of Counties Green Government Advisory Committee and Energy, Environment, and Land Use Steering Committee.

• Founded an award-winning environmental and energy firm, Better Environmental Solutions, promoting practical solutions that focus on health and saving lives. He's worked on projects to help create almost 1000 jobs and greatly reduce pollution.

• Taught part time at MATC and is a frequent UW-Madison guest lecturer. He has also been a student in the UW Certified Public Manager Program.

• Worked as an environmental policy advisor on the campaign of President Clinton and Vice President Gore

• Served 18 years as an environmental educator and advocate for the Sierra Club. 

• Energy Conservation Advocate, VISTA Volunteer in the Carter Administration

• Former union leader

 

Family & Community

• Married 18 years to Mary Kay, who is a counselor. Son Tyler is a Memorial High School Junior and enjoys football, rugby, and band, and daughter Lea is a 7th grader and enjoys singing and acting.

• Former president, Madison Nordic Ski Club 

• First Unitarian Society church school teacher, reader and usher  

• Awards: FEMA Outstanding Public Service Award for helping flood victims, ARC Elected Official Award for helping those with disabilities, Clean Water Champion Award from Men's Fitness Magazine.
