Representative Gordon Hintz was re-elected to his third term to the State Assembly for the 2011-2013 Legislative Session. Named one of the “Best Legislators” in 2009 by Milwaukee Magazine, Hintz was appointed by Governor Walker to the State Building Commission and serves as a member on the Assembly Committees on Education and Financial Institutions.
During the 2009-2011 session, Hintz led the fight to regulate the predatory payday loan industry in Wisconsin, passed public financing and spending limits for Supreme Court elections, authored a law protecting tenants in foreclosures and protected state employees from frivolous lawsuits. He also played a key role in pushing for state funding for UW-Oshkosh’s first new academic building in almost 40 years and has been a champion for Oshkosh securing funding for the repair of the Grand Opera House, moving the reconstruction of Main Street (State Hwy 45) up to 2010, and working to reform the antiquated liquor license quota system that restricts potential development projects.
In last session’s budget, Hintz worked to defend important state priorities supporting our economy including increased funding for Wisconsin’s Technical College System, providing crucial training and retraining for Wisconsin workers; creation of Development Opportunity Zones, providing tax credits to businesses that create and sustain jobs that were key in Mercury Marine’s decision to stay in Wisconsin and Oshkosh Corporation’s expansion. Hintz pushed for quick approval of federal stimulus dollars that injected $32.3 million dollars into transportation building in Winnebago County, putting people to work right away and improving our state’s infrastructure.
Prior to serving in the Legislature, Hintz worked in government at the federal, state, and local levels. Hintz worked on the 1996 U.S. Senate campaign of the late Paul Wellstone before going to work for U.S. Senator Herb Kohl and former U.S. Representative Jay Johnson as a Legislative Staff Assistant in Washington, DC. Hintz also served as a Research Assistant for Governor Tommy Thompson’s Commission on State and Local Partnerships for the 21st Century (Kettl Commission) and worked as a Management Assistant and Budget Analyst for the City of Long Beach, CA.
Hintz, a native of Oshkosh, holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Hamline University and a master’s degree in public affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition to municipal consulting for Public Administration Associates, LLC, Gordon taught American Government at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 2005-2006.
Gordon is a member of the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce, Oshkosh Downtown Rotary, First Congregation Church Oshkosh, PROPEL (organization for young adults) and is a 2005 graduate of Leadership Oshkosh.
