Rep. Hebl Supports BadgerCare Plus Basic
Plan Provides Self-Funded Coverage Option for Over 20,000 Adults on Waiting List
Madison – Rep. Gary Hebl (D – Sun Prairie) was pleased to share the news last week that a new self-funded health care plan for adults without dependent children will soon be available for individuals on the state health care waiting list. The program is called BadgerCare Plus Basic and it will provide enrollees with limited access to physicians, hospital services, generic prescriptions and catastrophic coverage. The program is paid for entirely through a monthly premium of $130 and is designed as a bridge plan to keep individuals healthy while they wait for space in the BadgerCare Plus Core Plan.
“This is a great way to build off the success we have had with BadgerCare and to meet the demand that’s out there for affordable health care coverage,” Rep. Hebl said. “With BadgerCare Plus Basic those on the waiting list will have access to health care without having to risk financial ruin.”
For a monthly premium of $130, plus reasonable co-pays, BadgerCare Plus Basic members will have access to catastrophic coverage plus:
· Up to 10 physician visits each year;
· Limited hospitalization;
o Coverage for first inpatient hospital stay and five outpatient hospital visits;
o Subsequent stays after $7,500 deductible;
· Up to five emergency room visits each year;
· Some generic medications; and
· Badger Rx Gold discount drug membership.
“With over 60 percent of all bankruptcies due to medical debt, and thousands of uninsured residents all across Wisconsin, BadgerCare Plus Basic is just what we need, just when we need it,” Rep. Hebl added. “This program will provide access to health care now and will help bridge the gap until national health care reform can go into effect.”
BadgerCare Plus Basic will accept applications beginning in March 2010 with enrollment and benefits beginning April 2010.
To be eligible for coverage, individuals must have incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty level ($1,805 monthly income for a single person and $2,428.33 for a married couple), have no dependent children, and be included on the waiting list for the BadgerCare Plus Core Plan.
