Representative Barca Statement on the Retirement of State Auditor Janice Mueller

5/17/11

Madison – Yesterday Wisconsin State Auditor and Director of the Legislative Audit Bureau, Janice Mueller, announced she will be retiring later this year.  Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) issued the following statement in response to this announcement to thank Auditor Mueller for her dedicated work and recognize her service to the state of Wisconsin:

“State Auditor Janice Mueller has been a devoted public servant, a skilled auditor, and a fiscal watchdog on behalf of the citizens of this state.  As she announces her move forward beyond state service, I want to express on behalf of all Wisconsinites my sincere appreciation for the work that she did and the manner with which she did it.”

“The epitome of professionalism and objectivity, Jan has been a tireless advocate for good government and has fought government waste and fraud throughout her 35 years of service.  I had the distinct pleasure of working closely with Auditor Mueller as Chairman of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee and count her as a personal friend.”

“During her time at the bureau, Jan has worked to save the taxpayers millions of dollars, directly impacted countless legislative proposals, and made programs spanning the breadth of state government more efficient and effective.”

“Ever the champion for sound public policy and the taxpayers of the state, Jan has aggressively preserved the bureau’s independence and non-partisan approach.  In increasingly partisan times, Auditor Mueller has upheld the integrity of the Legislative Audit Bureau and maintained the confidence and trust of both sides of the aisle.”

“Under her leadership, the award-winning bureau has achieved national acclaim as a leader in the field of financial auditing and program evaluation.  As the first female to become the Wisconsin State Auditor, Jan was also the recipient of the Wisconsin Women in Government’s First Woman Award.”

“Jan will be greatly missed, and as she moves toward the next chapter in her life, the state will lose one of its most valuable resources.  As we recognize the many contributions that Jan has made for the state, we must all thank her for her superior work and dedicated service.”
